Siemens Mobility have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Project Engineer (Primary Design) to join our Rail Infrastructure Electrification Power Conversion Engineering business in York.

Your role, and what you’ll be doing:

The Senior Design Engineer (Primary Design) will play a leading role delivering primary design whilst supporting the development of junior colleagues, for key customers in UK and worldwide working with our core Engineering Team in Germany. They will use their design and construction experience to guide the optimal development of primary design to meet environmental, safety, cost and programme objectives.

Reporting to the Principal Power Conversion Engineer, the successful applicant will continue to develop the team in order to deliver consistent high-quality primary engineering from concept and bid to successful entry into service. The successful applicant will have technical responsibility to plan and engineer projects of High Voltage Converter Stations including the development of concepts to customer specifications. This role demands a flexible approach, integrating design across disciplines from LV to HV, from Civils to OLE with support from specialist colleagues.

What will be my Responsibilities?

  • Technical responsibility for primary layout and equipment design on substations up to 400kV to meet the requirements of the contract, promoting safety, minimising cost, considering constructability and future reliability. Accountable for approving primary engineering design of the team as required.

  • Verification authority of all Primary designs i.e. Layouts, technical specifications, loading data, civil guide drawings etc.

  • Responsible for co-ordination with the client, civil, project management and other interfaces and deliver a high-quality technical output from the team in line with the agreed delivery timescales and budget.

  • Conduct customer training and support PreFAT/FAT and commissioning activities.

  • Actively participate in research and development activities together with other specialists to develop the state-of-the-art primary engineering solutions of future power conversion products and solutions.

  • Responsible for ensuring design risk assessments/HAZID’s are in place for all design solutions and residual risks are passed on to the H&S file. Positively influence design and construction safety performance and aims for zero accidents.

  • Abide by all business compliance requirements in line with Company policies, for example Business Conduct Guidelines & Confidential Information.

  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills, ownership and accountability are pivotal for this role. Makes a positive contribution to the team. Acts as a coach to train the team. Sets goals and clarifies expectations of the team on the delivery of Projects. Invests time to lead and facilitate the work of others. Responds to the ideas, concerns, and needs of junior members within the team.

Where called upon the post holder would also undertake the role of Contractors Appointed Engineer (CRE) in accordance with the requirements of Network Rail regime and shall be able to demonstrate competencies associated with Issue 6 of NR/L2/INI/02009.

What Qualifications, Skills and Experience do I need?

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience. Member of the IET or equivalent Professional Body; Chartered status is desirable.

  • Extensive experience leading, delivering high quality 3D primary electrical designs and having verification authority within the Electricity Transmission, Distribution or Railway industry using Power Electronics technology including HVDCs, Static Frequency Converters, Static Var Compensators, Rolling Stock traction and auxiliary power converters and other motor drives.

  • Fully conversant with the latest Transmission, Distribution and/or Railway standards & technologies with practical construction experience.

  • Demonstrable HSQE management knowledge including CDM requirements.

  • Experience with direct client interface and representing the business to external parties is desirable.

  • Proven level of management experience including supervising and developing junior colleagues, Strong communication and presentation skills.

  • Flexible, innovative approach, able to evaluate, adapt and apply alternative new technologies.
