The Senior Mechanical Validation & Packaging Engineer will contribute to ensuring the robust design and sustainable shipment of Microsoft products across the globe.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will perform the mechanical validation of Microsoft designs including but not limited to server chassis, racks, latches, power supplies, slide rails, and other building block components to ensure proper mechanical operation throughout their intended life in transportation and operation. In addition, you will design and develop packaging solutions for component and rack level systems to ensure their functional and structural integrity throughout the transportation and delivery process.

To validate the mechanical design of Microsoft products, you will need to learn, understand, apply, and continuously improve mechanical design and test specifications. You will be responsible for applying best practices and leading development of comprehensive test protocols. As a key member of the development team, you will review mechanical designs and contribute to their improvement by actively applying lessons learned from validation throughout new product development. In this role, you will develop relationships with ODM partners and external validation test facilities to advance the scale, quality, and fidelity of validation testing for Microsoft designs. Throughout product development, you will be required to communicate validation test plans, results, and analysis. You will manage large amounts of data across programs and will need to develop and apply modern knowledge management methods to ensure data integrity, ubiquity, and access to team members.

To develop packaging solutions for Microsoft products, you will need to develop robust and sustainable designs from concept through production. You will need to utilize CAD tools and databases, create drawings, assign part numbers, and create Bill of Materials (BOMs) to manage portfolios of packaging solutions that span Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) to complete racks. You will be responsible for learning, applying, and improving on sustainable packaging design from a materials and re-use approach. As a packaging design engineer contributing to Microsoft’s shipping operations, you will have direct impact on optimizing cost and contributing to the company’s ambitious carbon negative goals.

As a Senior Mechanical Validation and Packaging Engineer, you will have the exciting responsibility for ensuring the functional integrity of Microsoft products enroute and operating inside datacenters all over the planet.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Education : Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering or equivalent experience-based learning

  • Experience : Minimum of 6 years of industry experience related to mechanical validation and packaging design

  • Technical Skills : Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., PTC Creo,) understanding of mechanical design principles, material selection, manufacturing processes, and validation

  • Leadership Abilities : Experience leading design and validation activities

  • Problem-Solving : Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve mechanical design issues and optimize system performance

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 years of experience in the electronics industry specifically related to mechanical validation of products (ie shock & vibration testing of electronic enclosures and related failure analysis techniques)

  • 2 yrs experience with mechanical simulation tools (ie Abaqus, Ansys)

  • Certification in Packaging Design

  • Experience with industry validations such as ISTA, ASTM, and GR-63-CORE

  • Experience with prototyping, tooling design, and high-volume manufacturing for packaging solutions

  • Knowledge of statics and dynamics principles, material science, and design for manufacturing

  • Proficient at PTC Creo, Windchill or similar software

  • Experience partnering with ODM engineers
