Stony Brook University Senior Accountant in Stony Brook, New York


Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full-time, accounting-related experience. Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Experience with automated financial management systems. Proven proficiency in Microsoft Excel to include the use of advanced formulas. Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) software (i.e., PeopleSoft or Oracle). Relational database knowledge. Higher Education experience.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Senior Accountant will be a key resource for Stakeholders in the day-to-day review of financial data. Stakeholders use this data provided to help make decisions, measure economic performance, and plan costs. This position is also responsible for processing transactions consistent with SUNY policy and accounting principles. Be a resource to the organization regarding State translations and guidelines. Perform complex and more analytical accounting functions, reconciliation, and financial analysis. Provide insight on past trends and guide the department with business decisions. Be proactive and anticipate issues and concerns that could result in problems.

Financial transactions, Request and Accounting Processes:

o Identify opportunities for improving processes, implementing best practices, and optimizing the efficiency of the Department.

o Develop and document business processes and accounting policies and procedures.

o Analyze financial information to identify trends, inefficiencies, or other insights that can help guide business decisions.

o Mentor financial analysts by providing guidance and training.

o Work on audit requests, providing necessary documentation, and addressing any questions or concerns.

o Review State Journal, Payroll, and Allocation transfer requests.

o Provide guidance to Campus stakeholders regarding accounting guidelines, policies, and procedures.

o Review and assist the work of the associate and staff accountants.

o Work collaboratively with the Department to create financial reports.

o Be proactive by anticipating issues and concerns that could result in problems.

o Ensure all expenditures are compliant with SUNY policy and guidelines.

o Track and analyze expense trends and research anomalies. Advise department stakeholders of your findings.

Accruals & Accrued Cash Balances:

o Coordinate and review semi-annual IFR Accruals worksheet completed by Campus Departments.

o Review and assist with understanding of accrued cash balances and components.

o Identify operational and structural deficiencies in accounts for implementation of deficit reduction plans and lowering cash deficits.

o Perform complex and analytical accounting functions, reconciliation of general ledger transactions and financial analysis. Ownership of specific processes within their accounting area.

o Identify management informational needs and develop financial reports to show the status of fiscal data trends.

o Track expense trends and research anomalies.

Accounts Maintenance:

o Responsible for the maintenance of all (COA) Chart of Accounts (SBAM, PeopleSoft, SUNY,) including all level tables and reconciliation of SUNY to PeopleSoft.

Refund & Transfer Reconciliations:

o Review and reconcile Salary Refunds and transfer transactions to their proper accounts.

Recharge Transactions:

o Review, reconcile, process, and upload Departmental recharges.

Rate Development:

o Analyze and develop IFR and S&F rates. Review past year's trends.

o Serve as a financial resource to Department heads, Business Managers, and VP Coordinators on matters relating to service centers.

* Additional Duties & Responsibilities as Assigned:

o Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.


Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,026 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.SUNY implemented a hybrid telecommuting pilot program. This position has been approved to participate in the pilot, which allows for up to 5 remote days per pay period.
