The Earth Systems Program is an interdisciplinary environmental science major and coterminal master’s program. Students learn about and independently investigate complex environmental problems caused by human activities in conjunction with natural changes in the Earth system.

About this role

The Earth Systems Interdisciplinary Program in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability seeks a highly qualified lecturer to develop and teach environmental communication courses and mentor students enrolled in our Master of Arts, Environmental Communication degree program. The Environmental Communication Lecturer will support students in gaining theory, methods, and tools for effective communication of environmental science, policy, social, and justice issues to diverse audiences, including the general public, policy makers, frontline communities, and other stakeholders as a core competency for achieving social-environmental sustainability.

The primary duties of this position include:

  • Teaching 1-2 classes per quarter, including a combination of existing classes and developing new environmental communication classes in the lecturer’s area of specialty.

  • Leading a section of Earth Systems 295, the Environmental Communication Seminar, and supervising master’s students’ practicum placements and capstone projects, as well as helping to support and mentor undergraduate capstone projects as appropriate.

  • Partnering with faculty, co-instructors, and academic staff to develop and enhance curricular materials, case studies, and structure for existing courses; helping ensure the courses meet their teaching and learning objectives.

  • Supervising course teaching assistants and developing lesson plans and pedagogical approaches for course sections.

  • General student advising, especially within the Earth Systems Program at the undergraduate and master’s level.

  • Creating personalized course evaluations and sharing relevant feedback with teaching teams to foster adaptive management and high quality of the courses.

  • Active engagement in the Earth Systems Program, the broader environmental communication community at Stanford, and with the Environmental Communication MA alumni community.

Initial appointments of the lecturer will be made for a term of one year beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year. This is a twelve-month appointment, renewable based on strong performance and programmatic needs (including budgetary considerations).

Qualifications

Applicants should have an outstanding professional record of practice in one or more modalities of environmental communication or hold a terminal degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a relevant area of communication theory or scholarship. Applicants should also have teaching or facilitation experience. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level and broad familiarity with a wide range of environmental and sustainability science, engineering, and social issues.

For those applying from a background in environmental communication practice, we seek candidates with demonstrated mastery of one or more modalities of environmental communication, including but not limited to science and/or environmental journalism, writing, or documentary work, multimedia production, formal or informal education, policy and political communication, institutional or strategic communications, environmental art practice, or environmental advocacy and organizing. For those applying from a background in environmental communication scholarship, we seek candidates with expertise in fields such as environmental communication, the science of science communication, mass media and communication, or social psychology, with a strong record of engagement in environmental and sustainability science, engineering, policy, or social issues.

Salary Range

The expected base pay range for this position is $79,000 -$104,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
