GE Vernova Lead Engineer - Mechanical Engineering in Stafford, United Kingdom

As part of the Mechanical Engineering team based in Stafford you will report to the Mechanical Engineering Team Leader within the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Valve Converter Engineering function.

The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the project activities related to HVDC applications. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition.

HVDC Valve Converters are large and complex structures, with typical dimensions of several metres in each direction and weighing many tens of tonnes. The mechanical design and the development of such converters is technically challenging and involves a variety of engineering disciplines, contribution through teamwork and an innovative approach.

The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised company in this exciting field. Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there will be some international travel to collaborate with other GE teams, test laboratories, strategic suppliers, and customer sites.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Activities related to the principles of mechanical engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical structures and systems.

  • In-depth knowledge and experience of finite element analysis (Ansys Mechanical) of static and dynamic simulations.

  • Able to create complex FEA models and perform static, dynamic and fatigue studies and analyse the results.

  • Prepare reports and documentation required for project delivery.

  • Specifications of key components such as structural steel and composite materials, cooling systems, and insulators to capture and translate design intent to stakeholders.

  • Support industrialisation, site works and commissioning.

  • Issue, review and approve drawings and design documentation.

  • Carry out validation and contribute to reporting of tests.

  • Innovation of new technical ideas for patent applications.

  • Integration with other engineering departments for product development and project teams.

  • Industrialisation of the validated design by interacting with stakeholders.

  • Actively broadening and deepening HVDC knowledge and sharing specialised expertise to other engineers of any level.

  • Strict adherence to standards and legislation.

  • Promotion and adherence to EHS policies within the team.

  • Occasional global travel for product validations, supply chain integration and site support

Skills and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline

  • A high degree of knowledge of FEA and Ansys (Mechanical and SpaceClaim)

  • Proficient with 3D CAD tools, preferably Creo and Windchill PDMlink

  • Aware of mechanical design to external standards (e.g. BSI, ISO, IEC, EN…).

  • Aware of industrialisation constraints

  • Familiar with detail manufacturing drawings and drawings templates.

  • Aware of requirements capture principles.

  • Competent specification & report writing such as technical notes.

  • Aware of EHS compliance in design and engineering.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and resolve problems.

Advantageous:

  • Prior experience of design for manufacture.

  • Awareness of intellectual property and the patent process.

  • Site experience of installation, commissioning and/or maintenance.

  • Evidence of sharing knowledge and experience.

  • Electrical experience or understanding of electrical principals.

  • Understanding of DFMEA & PFMEA.

  • Prior experience in a manufacturing environment.

Specific Abilities:

  • Able to work to deadlines with high quality.

  • Good technical communication.

  • Independent and team worker (Pro-Active).

  • Attention to detail.
