Position Title:

Mechanical Engineer

Job Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to hands-on development of engineering technologies, including: prototype development, additive manufacturing equipment, mechanical test equipment and product test systems

  • Provide detail oriented contributions to the design, data collection and analysis of commercial client prototypes, and associated research experiments

  • Interface with industry clients to understand product development challenges and develop proposals (scope of work and budget)

  • Manage design and development related projects for industry and company projects

  • Create technical reports and publications that document research developments

  • Complete analysis of complex mechanical systems (thermal, stress/strain, fluid, etc.), Conduct Life Cycle Assessments

  • Perform literature searches on a variety of research project specific topics, e.g. material properties, susceptibility to wear or corrosion.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least one year directly related internship or academic applied research experience in related work

  • No prior professional work experience required

  • Demonstration of strong knowledge of mechanical system fundamentals and mechanical design analysis

  • Demonstrated skills with computer aided design (CAD) tools

  • Strong interest and capability in the application of analytical tools (FEA, CFD, etc.)

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, for both technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's in Engineering is preferred

  • Experience with robotics and automation technologies, including integration of electrical components and software

Job Summary:

We are looking for an enthusiastic engineer with a strong background in computer aided design, a passion for sustainability, an understanding of new product development, and hands-on experience with testing and validation to support existing research programs and to develop new initiatives. In our environment, researchers work on a wide variety of different types of products and technologies, work with undergraduate and graduate students, and are engaged in collaborative research with leading companies.

As a Mechanical Engineer at GIS you may be involved in: direct interaction with clean technology startup companies to review designs and assist with product development efforts, design of cost-effective and reliable products and/or processes, application of computer aided design and analysis tools, execution of test programs for product/component reliability and performance, and development of robotics and automation solutions. You should be equally comfortable with a hands on development role (prototype development and testing) and with model-based engineering tools, such as SolidWorks. GIS will also support your pursuit of a master's degree.
