Your Role and Responsibilities

As an Industrial Design lead, you will be expected to engage with all parties involved in the definition and development of new IT hardware products (marketing, user researchers, product management, mechanical development and testing, ... ) and deliver on project phases on time and on budget.

As a Designer, technology is your medium and you use prototyping skills and collaboration with development, to bring a product from concept through delivery. Your attention to detail insures the original vision and expectations, in terms of functionality, fit, and finish, are reflected in the production hardware.

As a Lead, your goal is to optimize IBM products to meet clients' needs, and you demonstrate initiative and self-motivation. You leverage facilitation skills, and apply IBM Enterprise Design Thinking, to help clients articulate their overall strategy and be user-centric rather than feature-focused.

Working closely with product management, you will have a broad understanding of user needs which will lead to insight into the marketplace, considering entire lifecycle, and telling a compelling story around your design goals.

As a User Advocate, you have the opportunity to understand firsthand the impact of our products on the end users. The opportunity as a Designer is to take the understanding and translate that into actionable insights to help the Product Delivery team continuously deliver.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in Industrial Design and Human Factors, working in an enterprise-level company, with proven ability to provide industrial design support for multiple programs and turn concepts into offerings.

  • Demonstrated success in product and mechanical design, with proficient use of CAD (SolidWorks) and rendering software (KeyShot).

  • Interest and ability to solve complex mechanical challenges

  • Proven communication skills in a customer facing environment.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a multi-product Design Lead.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Experience in leading Industrial Design through product development process, with innovation; interest in discovering new technologies, materials, and processes applicable to our industry and securing IP (with the objective of becoming an IBM master inventor).

  • Understanding of the IT industry's and knowledge of building practices, as well as hardware UX Research

  • Passion in articulating a coherent and unified product branding across the product portfolio (numerous design awards).

  • Use iterative research to uncover insights - improving design, usability and E2E client experiences across products and brands, with Prototyping and 3D printing skills, to validate concepts

The salary will vary depending on your job-related skills, experience and location. Pay increment and frequency of pay will be in accordance with employment classification and applicable laws. For part time roles, your compensation and benefits will be adjusted to reflect your hours. Benefits may be pro-rated for those who start working during the calendar year.
