Mertz is looking for Welder Trainees to join our team. Employees in this paid position train full-time to become structural welders. Welder trainees are responsible for learning how to fabricate miscellaneous trailer and tank or vessel parts and assemblies. Primarily structural with Spray Arc and MIG welding. Upon completion of training and certification, weld trainees are promoted to structural welders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic understanding of materials, tools, and welding processes preferred.
  • Some wire-welding experience and / or basic training preferred.
  • Read a tape measure.
  • A demonstrated willingness to learn.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Study drawings and prints of work to be performed.
  • Clean parts to be welded using wire brushes and grinders.
  • Sets up, adjust, and operate welding equipment as electric arc welders, gas welders, and select proper electrodes, gas orifices, torch tips, etc., based on type of material being welded.
  • Clean and maintain tools and equipment used in the work.
  • Must completely follow shop related safety protocol, policies, and procedures.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when working on the manufacturing floor including, but not limited to, eye, ear, and foot protection.
  • Lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • Walk up and down flights of stairs.
  • Walk, reach with hands and arms overhead, above shoulder and horizontally.
