WSP USA Structural Engineer - Primary Structural Steel Welding Inspector in New York, New York

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Structural Engineer - Primary Structural Steel Welding Inspector for our New York City, NY office. Be involved in projects with our Buildings- Structures Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Your Impact

Serves as the senior level technical engineer in the area of Building Structures . In this role, functions as a technical leader, who can:

  • Independently develop and apply advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to unique engineering problems.

  • Design elements of multidisciplinary projects for new construction and modifications to existing structures. This includes all phases of project development, from conceptual feasibility studies, prelimary design through final construction documents, in addition to construction phase services.

  • Perform/manage field inspections at project sites .

  • Perform structural steel, bolting and welding special inspections of structural steel and fabricated components at the site of fabrication and erection.

  • Supervise work of certified Secondary Structural Steel and Bolting and Welding Special Inspectors to comply with NYC Building Code requirements.

  • Perform standard and complex structural engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology and principles and other viable approaches.

  • Ensure all engineering designs implemented by the company meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards including but not limited to IBC, ASCE 7, ACI and AISC .

  • Act as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for projects of a moderate scope and complexity.

  • Write technical reports summarizing inspection findings and conclusions; generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using photographs, sketches, calculations, software, spreadsheets, technical drawings, and reports.

  • Verify load calculations, change orders, interpretation of contract plans and specifications; resolving differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.

  • Monitor project phasing plans and contractors' work to ensure quality control and contract compliance; documenting work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.

  • Responsible for leading and creating new conceptual designs and overseeing the work of junior level staff.

  • Support technical requests from current and proposed customers.

  • Supervise, develop, evaluate and assign work to junior engineering staff on projects of medium to high complexity and serve as a technical advisor providing knowledge and expertise.

  • Promotes a culture that is conducive to quality.

  • Accountable for managing structural design for multiple projects, including engineering schedule and budget performance, quality of engineering solutions and deliverables.

  • Actively coordinates with other internal/external team members.

  • Responsible for coordinating project schedules.

  • Develops strong relationships with and becomes a trusted partner with clients.

  • Engage in contact with client and contractor personnel to schedule and coordinate project inspection.

  • Responsible for identifying key client interests and drivers on projects.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering with an emphasis on structural from an accredited Engineering Program.

  • 3+ years of relevant post education experience in engineering, special inspections of buildings, structural steel welding and bolting inspections.

  • New York State Professional Engineer (PE) License.

  • AWS CWI Welding Special Inspector certification.

  • ICC Structural Steel and Bolting Special Inspector certification.

  • OSHA-10 Hr safety certification.

  • Valid state driver's license. Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.

  • Well-defined knowledge of construction inspection principles, field inspection practices, process, methods and techniques.

  • Well-defined knowledge of relevant construction codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

  • Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.

  • Competent critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from inspection and testing results, data collation, load calculations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.

  • Ability to direct others in the field such as subcontractors and junior-level staff to consistently complete tasks safely, efficiently, and accurately according to specifications.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Member and active participant in industry organizations.

  • ACI or ICC Concrete Construction Special Inspector certification.

  • ICC Prestressed Concrete Special Inspector certificate preferred.

  • ICC Structural Masonry Special Inspector certification preferred.

  • Qualified Parking Structure Inspector (QPSI) certified by New York City DOB is preferred.

  • Experience in structural stability inspections preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

Expected Salary: $71,700- $122,980

WSP USA is providing the compensation range and general description of other compensation and benefits that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and geographic location.
