The purpose of this position is to support all Industrial Operations automated mechanical, electrical, electronic controlled equipment and Programmable Logic Control (PLC) controlled systems.

The Electronics Engineer will diagnose, troubleshoot and repair individual pieces of equipment and or complex equipment processes and control systems, participates in complex projects including the implementation, replacement, and upgrade of equipment control systems, production lines, and industrial utilities systems. This can include manufacturing equipment, material handling equipment (conveyors, sorters, robots, and automated storage and retrieval systems), and refrigeration control systems. As the subject matter expert (SME) on these systems, the engineer is responsible for training less experienced Industrial Maintenance technicians in these areas.

The impact this position has on Publix is maintaining a quicker response to equipment downtime by having the ability to troubleshoot electronics on equipment which allows the manufacturing and distribution facilities to continue to produce and ship product to retail.

Responsible for:

  • Acting as a diagnostic expert on mechanical, electrical, and electronically controlled equipment and systems

  • Supporting all Industrial Operations automated mechanical, electrical, electronic controlled equipment, and PLC controlled systems

  • Participating in complex projects including the implementation, replacement and upgrade of equipment control systems, production lines and industrial utilities systems

  • Acting as an internal technical consultant, subject matter expert and teacher concerning automated mechanical, electrical, electronic controlled equipment, and PLC controlled systems

  • Collaborating with the Industrial Operations Automation Engineering team

Additional Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to balance the relationship between cost and reliability of components and equipment in electronic and electrical control systems

  • Ability to analyze operational and process control data to diagnose and resolve system performance issues

  • Ability to troubleshoot and calibrate process instruments that utilize DC voltage and current signals to measure temperature, pressure, flow, level and density

  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment and processes that utilize PLCs and human-machine interfaces (HMIs) in standalone and networked configurations

  • Ability to proficiently read, interpret and update one-line diagrams, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), blueprints, mechanical drawings and schematics

  • Ability to proficiently read and interpret PLC ladder logic and capable of making temporary modifications to existing PLC and HMI programs to improve troubleshooting effectiveness

  • Ability to use voltmeters, analyzers, and diagnostic software

  • Ability to work within electrical panels and on electrical distribution systems with voltages up to 480 VAC, using proper safety procedures

  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems and controls and electro-mechanical systems composed of various sensors, servo motors and drives, shafts, gearboxes, transmissions, chains, pulleys, sprockets, cams, bearings, and electronic encoders

  • Ability communicate effectively to provide instructions and guidance to technicians and equipment operators during problem solving events and when demonstrating equipment functions and features

  • Ability to train others

  • Ability to self-teach to maintain state-of-the-art proficiency in automation and control systems

  • Ability to travel overnight

  • Ability to be on-call for remote support 24/7

  • Willingness to work a variable schedule including nights, holidays, and weekends to meet Industrial Operations business needs

  • Willingness to travel via commercial airline or company plane

  • High degree of self-motivation, commitment and integrity and willingness to work around the needs of Industrial Operations

  • Willingness to accept change and be a vehicle for change

Year End Bonus:

As a year-end bonus to associates, Publix issues one month’s extra pay (pro-rated in the first year) each year if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check that year. This is calculated as a 13th month of pay in the Potential Annual Pay with Bonus line above.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering; or equivalent experience and Certified Electronics Technician certification from an accredited trade school; or 10 years of electronics experience in an industrial maintenance environment

  • One (1) year of electronics experience in an industrial maintenance environment

  • Intermediate knowledge of personal computers, printers, network configuration and IT terminology and architecture

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Power Point, Teams and SAPCM

  • Intermediate knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC software systems

  • Basic knowledge of CAD software

  • Basic knowledge of Visio software

  • Intermediate knowledge of HMI software and systems

  • Knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment

  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and systems

  • Knowledge of electrical systems and equipment up to 480 volts AC, including three-phase transformers, breakers, switch gear, electric motors, servos and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

  • Knowledge of programmable logic controllers

  • Knowledge of electrical diagnostic equipment and instruments

  • Knowledge of digital and analog electronic concepts

  • Knowledge of feedback control systems and their applications

  • Knowledge of mathematics and statistical data analysis

  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance principles, basic maintenance management principles and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) functions

  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems and controls

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and proficient in applying safe work practices such as Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) and arc flash protection

  • Knowledge of good manufacturing practices (GMPs)

  • Knowledge of internally designed process control systems

  • Knowledge of manufacturer equipment specific control systems (Swisslog, Dematic, Uniloy, Reimelt system, KPS systems)

  • Knowledge of automation technologies and industry trends

  • Ability to make equipment and process improvement recommendations
