Description of Work

This position serves as Assistant District Engineer in District Two Office located in Winston-Salem, NC. The duties of this position include and are not limited to: Project Delivery, Monitoring division and centrally let project construction schedules and cost review and process access permits, review engineering plans for subdivisions, commercial, and other developments requesting access to state highways, and review and approve developer plans and agreements for turn lanes or other roadway improvement projects. This position coordinates preparation and review of traffic impact analyses and develops schedules for planned improvements. This position also approves driveway permits, encroachment agreements, subdivision reviews, and road additions and abandonments within Davie, Forsyth, and Stokes counties. Position also represents NCDOT at meetings with planning organizations, municipalities, and other organizations. This position will be responsible for Contract Administration of state and federally funded projects and for maintain those projects in HiCAMS. Assists the District Engineer and Office Staff with other job assignments as delegates or required. POS #60020913

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.

  • Experience writing memos, reports and emails that clearly convey technical information and engineering concepts.

  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.

Additional Expectations:

This position must apply safety philosophy to all operations. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including night work, heights, highway traffic and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized and persuasive manner in both verbal and written communication. Ability to supervise activities of lower-level employees and instruct them in proper work methods of highway and bridge construction. Knowledge/Skill with Microsoft Office products such as Word and Excel. Knowledge of HiCams and SharePoint/Plus preferred. Registration as a Professional Engineer by NC Board of Examiners for Engineers & Surveyors preferred. The selected applicant will be expected to legally drive a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
