We are looking for people with the ability to make a difference, pro-actively manage requirements and risks and influence others to deliver successfully. Candidates must have excellent communication and problem solving skills along with demonstrable experience in structural design related to the delivery of development.

Our Structural team specialises in providing sustainable development solutions from site selection through to detailed design and implementation. To support our increasing workload with exciting new projects and prospects we are seeking to recruit across all senior grades to join our team based in Exeter. We will also consider Truro as a location.

The SW structural team has a wide variety of projects providing specialist advice to both private and public sector clients on healthcare, commercial, residential, defence, science and research and mixed-use development led and masterplanning projects. WSP in the SW provide holistic sustainable design, net zero carbon design, MMC and DfMA advice to clients and contractors, specialist basement, international retail and indoor velodrome, passivhaus pool and high rise expertise. The team takes a strategic lead role on many of our multi-disciplinary projects, and works closely with our MEP, civil engineering, planning, infrastructure design, transport and environmental teams.

A typical week would include:

  • Contributing to innovative and sustainable structural engineering designs for a huge range of projects

  • Liaising closely with architects and co-professionals at project inception to establish project briefs

  • Taking a lead role managing WSP multi-disciplinary projects

  • Helping support your structural team members and taking part in design, design reviews and staff development reviews

  • Coordinating with mechanical & electrical engineers, geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, landscape architects and other specialists

  • Preparing feasibility and options studies, concept design through to detail structural designs

  • Assessing sites and buildings for their potential for re-use

  • Carrying out embodied carbon assessments to inform decision-making at all stages of projects

  • Using our digital tools to improve design and delivery of projects

  • Preparing bid documentation and sometimes assisting with submissions

  • Enthusiasm for sustainable design and digital delivery

  • A track record in the supervision of designs produced by junior colleagues

  • Experience in design of a variety of building types and scales

  • Direct experience of delivering efficiently in a BIM environment

  • A relevant Degree (BEng/MEng or similar)

  • Chartered (MIStructE)

  • Experience of operating as a lead client contact for consultancy services and the fostering of excellent relationships with Clients and co-professionals

  • Excellent communication skills, with a clear track record of presenting compelling written work in support of development proposals

  • A high level of numeracy with strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking (essential).

  • Significant experience and capability in financially and programme managing projects using appropriate business tools

  • Experience of team management responsibilities including line management and day-to-day operations
