Description of Job

About the Unit

The Engineering Assistant works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's Flexible Pavement Laboratory/European Laboratory. The Unit tests Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and ensures that the quality of materials being sold to the state by contractors is adequate for the pavement design life.

About the Position

The Engineering Assistant provides technical assistance to the Flexible Pavement Lab and the European Lab by implementing proper test procedures, operating lab equipment, recording test results and submitting test results to engineering support staff.

Major Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists lab personnel perform Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) testing in both the Flex Lab and the Euro Lab according to the FMM and LMTP.

  • Assists in performing Gradation and learn to perform Volumetric testing.

  • Learns to perform testing including the French Rut test, the Hamburg Wheel Tracker test, the Ideal CT test, and the AMPT test.

  • Typical Gradation and Volumetric Tests performed are: CP 51 (Maximum Specific Gravity), CP 44 (Bulk Specific Gravity), CP 55 (Reducing HMA Field Samples to Testing Size), CP 31 (Sieve Analysis of Aggregates), CP 32 (Reducing Field Samples of Aggregates to Testing Size), CP-L -5120 (Asphalt Binder Content by Ignition Method), CP-L 5106 (Hveem Stability), CP-L 5115 (Density of Specimens Compacted by the SuperPave Gyratory Compactor), and CP-L 5109 (Resistance of Bituminous Mixture to Moisture Induced Damaged).

  • Typical equipment used is: Vacuum Pumps, Bulk Tanks, Mechanical Splitters, Mechanical Shakers, Mechanical Washers, Ignition Ovens, Stabilometers, Gyratory Compactors, Compression Machines, Hamburg Wheel Tracker Machine, French Rutter Machine, Linear Kneading Compactor Machine, Saw Cut Coring Machine, and AMPT Machine.

  • Receives, logs and distributes samples to the appropriate lab including a wide range of materials such as soils, aggregate, concrete, steel, asphalt cement, and asphalt mixes.

  • Maintains, repairs and calibrates Flexible Pavement Lab testing equipment and Euro Lab testing equipment.

  • Maintains calibration records according to American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) R18.

  • Trains to check statewide CDOT laboratory testing equipment as directed by the lab Inspection Coordinator.

  • Learns to perform annual AASHTO Material Reference Laboratory (AMRL) / Round Robin sample setups, testing, and reporting of test results.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Typical work schedule is 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday-Friday

  • 5% in-state/overnight travel to assist with inspections and assist in annual round robin sampling

  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or wind conditions caused by the weather

  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles

  • May be required to drive during daytime working hours to pick up samples and lab supplies

  • Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasional­ly, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force regularly to move objects

  • Exposure to non-weather related hot and cold temperatures

  • Contact with water and other liquids or exposure to non-weather related humid conditions

  • Exposure to fumes, noxious odors, mists, gasses, dusts and poor ventilation that may affect the respirator system, eyes or the skin

  • Proximity to moving mechanical parts

  • Exposure to radiant energy

  • Exposure to a shaking objects or surfaces

  • Performs high heat testing

  • Exposure to high pressure conditions, toxic vapors or caustic chemicals

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED

  • AND at least two years of experience performing construction inspection, conducting or assisting with materials testing, and/or assisting in the design of construction plans or construction documentation.

  • One year of the experience must have been assisting with, or conducting materials testing.

    Substitution: Completion of engineering, construction management or other coursework closely related to the Major Job Duties from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.If using education qualify, you must submit a legible copy of your unofficial college transcript(s) or credential evaluation report with your application. Transcripts must show your name, the name of the school, all coursework and degree(s) conferred. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must have been assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. Failure to provide a transcript or credential evaluation report will result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position.

    TheExceptional Applicant will be a Materials Tester with demonstrated ability or accomplishment in the following:

  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;

  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;

  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;

  • Familiarity with the CDOT Field Materials Manual and the Laboratory Manual of Test Procedures;

  • Knowledge and experience with HMA testing;

  • Familiarity with AASHTO standards, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), CDOT Materials Manual, CDOT Laboratory Procedural Manual, the AMRL accreditation program and the CDOT Highway Specifications Manual.

  • Familiarity with inspecting, calibrating, and maintaining testing equipment;

  • Strong willingness to quickly learn job duties;

  • Strong mathematical skills;

  • Excellent reasoning, analytical, and problem solving ability;

  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;
