Position Summary

The work as a Welder Trainee is a practical way of learning a skilled trade through a structured systematic program of on-the-job training. The Trainee Program requires that the Welder Trainee demonstrate the ability to perform job functions under the direct and constant oversight of the Welding School, Senior Craftsmen, or Production Supervisor.

Duties & Responsibilities


You must learn and demonstrate the ability to perform job functions under the direct supervision of a mentor or senior craftsman. You must develop a high level of critical thinking with reading comprehension. Knowledge of the trade qualifications and performance as an entry level Welder is a plus. You must be able to learn, understand and perform the basic set up, adjustment, and operation of various welding equipment and hand tools used in the trade. Select welding filler material, joint design and proper heat ranges as directed by technical work documents. Travel and/or overtime may be required.


  • Be at least 18 years of age.

  • High school/GED.

  • Must have completed a vocational or technical school welding program.

  • Basic knowledge of the four welding processes: SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, and GMAW.

  • Able to read and interpret basic blueprints.

  • Has knowledge of how to use basic hand tools for the trade and can read a ruler.

  • Must observe good “housekeeping” habits.

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

  • Knowledge and practical skills tests required.

  • Qualifies as a welder/workmanship inspector in accordance with OII process instructions and welding procedures.

  • Must have the ability to obtain government base access.

  • Must be able to obtain secret/confidential security clearance.

Working conditions

This position is considered PRODUCTION/OUTDOOR WORK which is characterized as follows.

The shipyard/base/manufacturing work environment; the site may contain mobility barriers with uneven ground level and obstructed pathways. Climatic and environmental conditions at the job siste will be indoor/outdoor climate with various temperatures and noise levels caused by tools, machinery, equipment, and etc.

  • Lifts 20-50 pounds.

  • Works in confined spaces, kneels, jumps, runs, works while lying on stomach/back, crawls, and uses repetitive movements of the arms and hands.

  • Identifies color differences.

  • Wears PPE for skin protection.


  • Lifts 10-25 pounds.

  • Climbs stairs/ladders, stands, balances, stoops, squats, reaches, and lifts/carriesobjects.

  • Twists body, sits with back supported, head forward/flexed, head tilted/rotated, and works with arms extended overhead.

  • Operates a motor vehicle.


  • Lifts up to 10 pounds.

  • Wears PPE protection for body, vision, and hearing protection.
